The story

A regular cigar, given time

Every year, Habanos chooses one cigar from one of its great houses and asks something simple of it: to wait.

For 2024, that cigar is the Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills, announced at the Festival del Habano in Havana as the latest addition to the Reserva line.

The cigar itself has not changed. It remains the familiar Short Churchills, measuring 4⅞ by 50. There is no new blend, no reinvention. What sets it apart is time.

The tobacco selected for a Reserva is given years to mature before the cigar reaches the humidor. The result is an expression shaped not by addition, but by patience.

In a world that is always looking for what comes next, the Reserva is a reminder that sometimes the most interesting thing you can do with something already good is simply leave it alone for a while.

The 2019 harvest

One region. One year.

Every leaf in this cigar comes from Vuelta Abajo, the western corner of Pinar del Río widely regarded as Cuba’s finest tobacco-growing land. More unusually, every leaf comes from the same harvest: 2019.

That is what Cosecha 2019 means. One vintage, kept together from field to box.

Before a single cigar was rolled, the tobacco was aged for three years. The finished cigars were then left to rest longer still, well beyond the time most Cuban cigars are given.

Time does something to tobacco that cannot be recreated later. It softens the edges, allows the flavours to settle and brings the cigar into balance.

There is no shortcut to it. You simply have to wait.

The wrapper & bands

Marked as a Reserva

Beneath a smooth, naturally warm wrapper sits the blend on which Romeo y Julieta built its name. What distinguishes this release is visible before the cigar is ever lit.

Alongside the familiar Romeo y Julieta band sits a second: the mark Habanos reserves for these aged releases.

It is subtle and deliberate. A small sign that what lies within has already spent years waiting.

The allocation

Five thousand boxes. For the entire world.

Habanos produced just 5,000 three-cigar boxes of the Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills Reserva Cosecha 2019 for worldwide release, making this a presentation few will encounter. Reserva editions sit among the most sought-after expressions in Cuban tobacco, produced in strictly limited numbers and released only after years of ageing.

Of those 5,000 boxes, only a small allocation makes its way to India.

At The Slow Draw, it is available exclusively.

The packaging

Presented to be kept

For the first time, Habanos created a three-cigar gift box for the Romeo y Julieta Short Churchills Reserva Cosecha 2019, with just 5,000 produced worldwide. A presentation of this kind is usually reserved for special occasions such as the Festival del Habano, making its release particularly uncommon.

Alongside it sits the traditional twenty-cigar Reserva box, also produced in a limited run of 5,000 numbered boxes.

The three-cigar edition offers the same Cosecha 2019 Reserva in a presentation made to be given, collected, or simply kept.
